Art with a Sense of Adventure

Exploration = inspiration. What a thrill to get lost in a new city or to discover a side of town you've never experienced. It's the untold story I hope to find that gets me excited – to imagine the history behind a place stripped of its facade and to discover beauty where its least expected. The most inspiring places are real, sometimes grimy, often boldly colorful, and always loaded with layers of raw character.

To reveal that character I embrace flaws, even emphasize them, with techniques that make sporadic imperfections an integral part of the final piece. It all works best when I create intuitively. The process of layering and manipulating materials, like acrylic paint and paper to emulate the effects of time, adds texture and color that help tell our unique stories.

Bio

Growing up in rural Connecticut, art became a way for me to connect to the urban world that I admired and fantasized about as a kid. In cities I always felt like an outsider, a countrified imposter pretending to be street smart and sophisticated. Now I am grateful to be able to go unnoticed in a crowd and turn that stranger-in-a-foreign-land feeling into a unique artistic perspective.

Painting is my first love and over the years I also studied graphic design and photojournalism, both of which have significantly influenced my art. I am most known for my representational mixed media work that combines painting and original images which I hand print using an image transfer process, giving the work a modern edgy look. More recently I have been focused on abstract painting, drawing inspiration from one of the great abstractionists, Helen Frankenthaler.

Currently based in the Palm Springs area, you'll find me cruising the streets on a sporty blue bike. I have been a featured artist in CB2 stores and I primarily show my work through online galleries, as wells as in various venues in California, including SFMOMA Artist Gallery at Fort Mason.
